80’s New Wave gave us some of the best party music ever made, but the most of the songs had an undercurrent of melancholy. There’s a parallel to the current moment: a lot of people are getting giddy about their impending release from lockdown, but there is also a lot of sadness over what has been lost. Here are a few more New Wave era songs, just because.

And to top it off, my favorite version of “New York, New York”.

ReplyDeleteInteresting comment. For me it was the reverse. I grew up on Jazz and Classical, then discovered rock, and when New Wave came along in the 80’s, I was all in. But that was also when I was partying the hardest, and New Wave was first and foremost party music!
DeleteI also think Nina Hagen's New York New York is one of the best things ever to come out of rock music.
