New Wave (3)

80’s New Wave gave us some of the best party music ever made, but the most of the songs had an undercurrent of melancholy.  There’s a parallel to the current moment: a lot of people are getting giddy about their impending release from lockdown, but there is also a lot of sadness over what has been lost.  Here are a few more New Wave era songs, just because.

Here’s a twist on social distancing: send a stand-in. Siouxie:

“Enjoy the Silence” was last major release from Depeche Mode. Here are Lacuna Coil, with a more menacing version of it:

And to top it off, my favorite version of “New York, New York”.

    1. Interesting comment. For me it was the reverse. I grew up on Jazz and Classical, then discovered rock, and when New Wave came along in the 80’s, I was all in. But that was also when I was partying the hardest, and New Wave was first and foremost party music!

  2. I also think Nina Hagen's New York New York is one of the best things ever to come out of rock music.
